A PET Project For PAC Pets
Hidden amongst a row of eucalyptus trees between the Mansion turf field and the back fence is a new dog run for our PAC pets. Now, thanks to the group of 14 students in Mr. Martinez’s Physics, Engineering, and Technology (PET) class, our furry friends have some fancy fixtures for frolicing fun!
Every year, PET begins with a community project which both benefits the Crystal community and teaches the students how to safely use the shop tools. Past PET classes have built iPad holders for Graphic Arts students to display their work and a garden trellis for Ms. Agoff’s Environmental Science class. This year, Teddy, pictured below with his human Head of School Ms. Sortino and the PET students, suggested that some agility equipment for the dog run would make a nice contribution.
Implementing a Design Thinking methodology, the PET students got to work! They researched agility equipment, developed specifications and requirements, made preliminary drawings and prototypes, solicited VOC (Voice of the Canine) input, modified their designs, and then constructed and painted the final products, including an A-frame ramp, a teeter-totter, and a jump-through hoop. At the grand reveal, Teddy wagged his enthusiastic approval, as if to say, “I can’t wait to play here with my friends Chimmy, Mia, and Auby!”
“I’m always so impressed by how industrious our students are,” reflected Mr. Martinez. “It’s wonderful to see them leaving a legacy like this, just as the PET classes before them did.”
