March For Our Lives

Since the tragic shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, hundreds and thousands of students and their advocates have been organizing and protesting against gun violence across the nation. CSUS freshman Maya S was a local organizer for the “March For Our Lives” demonstration in downtown San Francisco...

...on March 24. She was the lead speaker, social media manager, and speaker coordinator for the event.

On March 14, students on both our Upper School and Middle School campuses walked out of class in solidarity with youth nationwide to commemorate the Parkland victims and protest gun violence. One of the Upper School organizers, Eliana F ‘18, spoke to the protesters about the issues and what students can do before showing a video of a moving speech by Parkland survivor, Emma Gonzalez.  Eliana told her fellow students, “We have a right to be heard and a right to safety,” as well as a responsibility to ensure “this never happens to any campus ever again.”  Eliana and fellow Crystal organizers, Novak C ‘21 and Maya S (see photo), are planning more actions on April 20.

In addition to speaking at the March 24 rally, Maya was interviewed by several press outlets, eloquently sharing her views on the issue and personal experiences. She told a reporter she hopes “adults will realize that we have grown up with this threat, of being scared to go to school--something they just don’t know. I hope they realize that this not something we want anyone to have to deal with in the future.”
