The Next Chapter Has Begun
It was a project nearly a decade in the making, from the point the Board of Trustees voted to expand the school by creating a new Middle School campus, to the
official opening of the campus in Belmont on August 27, 2017.
"The Next Chapter for Crystal," was the title of the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Before the event, 26 runners — including students, faculty, staff, and trustees — participated in the "Bookin' It to Belmont" Relay, a 5.7-mile trek starting on the Hillsborough campus and
ending at the new campus. Runners carried the school's 50th-anniversary book,
Through These Arches, written by former History Department Chair, Wells Wadleigh. Wells ran in the last leg, handing off the book to Gus the Gryphon and Gus Jr. (the new Middle School mascot) who then ran it to Amy Richards to symbolize the bridge between the two campuses and this auspicious moment in the school's history. Think Olympic torch, Crystal-style.
About 400 Crystal and Belmont community members celebrated the opening with self-guided tours of the three main facilities, the Gymnasium, the main Academic Building and the Multipurpose Building/Café. Guests enjoyed an ice cream social and stunning vistas across Waterdog Park and the Canyon that borders the campus.
The new Middle School Campus will eventually become home to 216 Middle School students, twice the number we've enrolled in the past. The Upper School campus in Hillsborough will maintain a student body of 350 once it is fully enrolled in a few years.
