Learning about Francophone Cultures
The new Francophone Identities via Cinema class that started this year has been an enormous success. This Upper School course, taught by Laetitia Keenan, is for Crystal’s students of French...
...who have already reached a high level of proficiency and who wish to enrich their language skills as well as their knowledge of the Francophone cultures. The first theme this year was “women in the Francophone world.” After studying Asia with the drama
Indochine, then Haiti with the documentary
Poto Mitan, students had the opportunity to learn about women in Africa through the study of the drama
Faat Kine (Senegal) and the documentary
Women With Open Eyes (Burkina Faso, Benin, Niger, Ivory Coast).
The sequence concluded with the visit of a guest speaker from the Ivory Coast, Massandje Dibi, with whom students could discuss important topics such as women’s rights, women in politics, access to education, excision, the importance of traditions, family values, tribes and languages, and economy. Massandje shared her traditional costumes and wooden masks with the students, and concluded the session by teaching the students
how to dance. This visit enabled the students to connect with and gain a better understanding of women in the Francophone African world. It was simply an amazing experience for everyone!
