2014 Gates Family Faculty Enrichment Grant Winners Announced

The Gates Family Faculty Enrichment Grant was established in 2012 by alumni parents Bobbie and Jamie Gates to foster the intellectual enrichment of CSUS teachers through significant annual awards.
Recipients of the Gates Grant will use the funds for a once-in-a lifetime experience that is large in scope. Eligible teachers are encouraged to dream big and craft proposals that may include a project, travel or an educational opportunity. We are thrilled to have had Jamie and Bobbie on campus on January 30 to surprise this year’s winners, Deb Hunt and Kathy Jany, with the announcement of their awards.

Librarian and Art History teacher Deb Hunt will use her award to travel to France to visit the Lascaux Cave, where the earliest known examples of human-created art are located, as well as Normandy and other cultural sites. World Languages Department Chair Kathy Jany will travel to Tahiti to immerse herself in that French-inspired culture, including a deep study of Gaugin and the island’s continued connection to France. Both Kathy and Deb were ecstatic about these “Bucket List” opportunities they have been dreaming about for years. It was truly a special goose bump-inducing moment when Bobbie and Jamie presented the winners with their certificates of achievement.

Last year’s winners include History Department Chair Kent Holubar, who traveled to Berlin to study and visit sites to be included in his new and innovative Power of Memory course initiated this school year. Students learn how to be a historian by analyzing how and why societies preserve and disseminate their own histories. The class includes trips to Washington, D.C. and Berlin, where students will visit historical sites that will inform their projects. History teacher Peter Kovas was the second winner last year, and he traveled to Indonesia to learn more about the culture, history and peoples of that uniquely diverse religious region to inform his Comparative Cultures class.
