Seventh Graders Champion Inclusion with Special Olympics
In partnership with Special Olympics Northern California, Crystal seventh graders host a day of inclusive athletics on the Middle School campus — and they design it themselves.
Drawing on what they learn in their wellness curriculum, students develop modified games and inclusive rules so that every participant can take part. The work turns classroom understanding of inclusive design into something students build and run.
The event caps the seventh grade's year-long Ability and Access theme, part of Crystal's Community Engagement program. Over the course of the year, students visit community partners including the National Institute of Canine Service and Training and Ivy Park at Belmont, learning how questions of ability and access shape everyday life before applying that understanding on their own campus.
